Volunteer Spotlight: Mrs. Rosser
Mrs. Rosser will be in her 9th year of volunteering with CWJC in the fall. When she first volunteered, she had been a substitute for another volunteer who was going to be out several weeks and had agreed to fill in for her…that was the beginning of her service, and we are so appreciative of all the ways she has given of her time!
While Mrs. Rosser initially did clerical work at CWJC, it was not long before the director at that time, Shirley Gossard, came to learn of Mrs. Rosser’s 25 years of work in human resources (HR). She had retired from her career with Texas Health and Human Services and was a valued teacher in the Jobs For Life class each semester. Her work in HR gave her a lot of insight about interviews, communication, and how to advocate for yourself in the workplace.
She admits that when she first started teaching that she learned quickly that every student had a unique story as to why they were in our program. Some just could not believe they were ready for employment, while others needed to “break out of a life cycle” and start anew. Mostly what she saw in the students was that they all had life events that made them question themselves or have feelings of low confidence, but, she says there were “so many different situations…you can’t put everyone all in one category.”
One student came to mind when she had first started volunteering—Becky (name has been changed) was only three weeks from graduating the program when she had a huge setback and could not continue the program. Becky had always wanted to be an accountant, but she had a bad marriage, her children were getting in trouble, and it was just too much for her to do. Some time later, Becky returned to CWJC to pick up where she left off. She had a lot of things in her life that she had to straighten out first, but she was set on finishing what she started. Fast forward 2 years, she ran into Becky and found out that she was an accountant at an established company in Abilene! She did it! That is a story she will never forget. God gave her a dream, and, in His time, she saw something beautiful come out of her hardship.
Mrs. Rosser currently serves as a prayer partner each semester and is dedicated to seeing God work in the lives of the women who are in our program. She is also leads as Director of her Sunday School class at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church, she has participated in Bible Study Fellowship for many years and takes care of her mother-in-law who is 102! Her motto is: If you’re not dead, you’re not done! Thank you, Mrs. Rosser for your dedication and faithfulness to CWJC’S mission!
